Overview.

Our birding safari will focus on many endemics, sub- continental specialties and regular migrants without compromising on the quality of accommodation, located in the areas we visit including Important Bird Areas. In addition to birding, which is the prime focus on this tour, there will be an opportunity to see and enjoy other forms of natural history such as Butterflies, Reptiles, different habitats and Mammals.

The itinerary covers a variety of habitats that include; dry savannah, tropical lowlands and highland forests, semi deserts, wetlands and other types of habitats. 

Day 1: Nairobi

On arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, our representative will meet, greet and then transfer you to Nairobi Serena Hotel which is a quiet sanctuary in a flower-filled garden amid the bustle of one of Africa’s most dynamic cities for your overnight stay.

Day 2: Mt Kenya

We will depart after early breakfast for a scenic drive through towns and villages practicing subsistence and large scale farming including pineapple plantations in Thika to Serena Mountain Lodge located on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya, Africa's second tallest mountain. Raised on stilts above the forest canopy, it is an excellent place to locate many highland forest species. Along the entrance road, we may encounter birds like Augur Buzzards, Crown Hawk-Eagle, Hartlaubs Turaco, Moustached Tinker Bird, Mosque Swallow, Black Saw-wing, Sharpe's Starling, Black-Tailed Oriole, Purple - Throated Cuckoo-Shrike, African Paradise- Flycatcher, Cape Robin-Chat, African Stone Chat, Broad-Ringed White-eye and Eastern Double-Collared Sunbird. The large and waterhole and saltlick at the lodge is host to many mammals which include the Buffalos, Antelope, Waterbuck and genet cats. Have dinner and overnight stay at your lodge.

Day 3: Samburu Game Reserve

We depart after breakfast to Samburu Game Reserve located in the semi arid land in Samburu District and one of the most exciting reserves in East Africa. The habitat and the rich woodlands along the Ewaso Nyiro River are teeming with wildlife. Exploration of the fantastic reserve will produce an almost overwhelming array of bird species; Orange bellied parrot, Rosy patched Bush shrike, Yellow-billed Hornbill, Bristle-Crowned Starling, Verreaux’s- eagle owl, Night Heron, Palm nut vulture, Pygmy falcon and the Donaldson-Smith Sparrow Weaver among other birds’ species. The unique northern species of animals include the Somali Ostrich, Besia Oryx, Gerenuk, gravy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe and Greater Kudu. The reserve is a good place to watch elephants and big Cats. Have dinner and overnight stay at Samburu Intrepids Club on full board basis.

Day 4: Samburu Game Reserve

Today, we will depart early in the morning with packed breakfast in search for animals and birds that includes Orange bellied parrot, Rosy patched Bush shrike, Yellow-billed Hornbill, Bristle-Crowned Starling, Vereauxs- eagle owl, Night Heron, Palm nut vulture, Pygmy falcon and the Donaldson-Smith Sparrow Weaver among other birds’ species. Have lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure before embarking on an evening game drive. Optional activities include a visit to a local School or Samburu Village. Have dinner and overnight stay at the camp.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park

We will depart after breakfast to Lake Nakuru National Park with a stopover at Thompson’s falls. Proceed with the drive down the eastern wall of the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park which is called by some, the greatest birding spectacle on earth! Huge numbers of Lesser Flamingos feed in the shallow alkaline water, sometimes up to a million, with smaller numbers of Greater Flamingos. Exploring the Acacia woodland and the lakeside marshes we will no doubt encounter many wonderful avian delights: Great White Pelican, Great Cormorant, African Spoonbill, African Fish-eagle, African Harrier-hawk, Hildebrandt's Francolin, Grey-headed Gull, Broad-billed Roller, Levaillant's Cuckoo, Green Wood-hoopoe, Rufous-necked Wryneck, Grey Woodpecker, Black Cuckoo-shrike, Northern Anteater-chat, Grey-backed Fiscal and African Fire finch. Mammals are also common in the park and it is one of the few places in East Africa where the endangered White Rhino can be found. Some of the other mammals to be found here include Rothschild’s Giraffe, buffalo, baboons and waterbucks among others. Have dinner and overnight at Lake Nakuru Lodge on full board basis.

Day 6: Lake Nakuru National Park

We will have a full day with game drives in this birds paradise with possibilities of more birds that include Hamerkop, Cape and Hottentot Teals, Tawny Eagle, Red-chested and Klaas' Cuckoos, Nyanza Swift, Greater Honeyguide, White-browed Robin-chat, Arrow-marked Babbler, Grey-crested Helmet-shrike, Ruppell's Glossy-starling, and Golden-breasted Bunting. Have dinner and overnight stay at the Lodge.

Day 7: Lake Baringo

Depart after breakfast to Lake Baringo. We will take a small boat to the Camp The bird walks here takes you through amazing volcanic landscapes and a rich habitat full of birdlife including Heuglin's Courser, Jackson, Hemprich Hornbill, Northern Grey Tit, yellow bellied Eremomela, Green winged Pytilia, silver birds, Jackson Golden backed and Three-banded courser among other birds in the area. Have dinner and overnight stay at Island Camp on full board basis.

Day 8: Lake Baringo

Today, we will continue with bird watching tours to Lake Bogoria. The Reserve is known for Hot Springs, Geysers and fantastic wildlife and birdlife. We will return to the camp for dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 9, 10 & 11: Kakamega Forest

Depart after early breakfast to Western Kenya driving through Kerio Valley and Eldoret as you capture scenery of the beautiful escarpments of the rift valley on strategic view points. Enjoy bird watching where you may encounter specials like Black-headed Lapwing, Meyer's Parrot, White-crested Turaco, African Black and Horus Swifts, African Pygmy kingfisher, Double-toothed Barbet, Long-billed Pipit, Silver bird, Brown Babbler, White-crested Helmet-shrike, Black-headed Gonolek on the way. Arrive at your hotel and spend three days in Kakamega with birding. Possibilities of sighting avian gems as the Great Blue Turaco, Bar-tailed Trogon, Blue-headed Bee-eater, Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill, Grey-throated, Yellow-spotted and Yellow-billed Barbets, Golden-crowned and Brown-eared Woodpeckers, African Broadbill and 10 species of greenbul is high. Have dinner and overnight stay on full board basis.

Day 12 & 13: Kisumu-Dunga Beach

We will leave after breakfast and head to Kisumu arriving at Dunga Beach early evening for a two days relaxation and more birding. Have dinner and overnight stay at the beach hotel.

Day 14: Masai Mara Game reserve

After breakfast, we depart heading southwards to Masai Mara national Reserve which is the northern extension of the famous Serengeti plains. Here we will find a wide variety of bird life, as well as some of the most spectacular mammals in Africa. Complimenting the wildlife is the dramatic scenery of endless grasslands, lush river valleys, and steep rock strewn escarpments. Some birds at Masai Mara include, Rufous-bellied Heron, Saddle-billed Stork, Coqui and Red-necked Francolins, Grey Crowned-crane, Temminck's Courser, Wattled Lapwing, Ross' and Schalow's Turaco, Malachite and Woodland Kingfishers, Yellow-throated Long claw, Rufous-chested Swallow, White-tailed Lark, Familiar Chat, Silver bird including other animals like the big cats, Topi, hartebeest, Oribi, Grant’s and Thomson gazelle, buffalo waterbuck , vervet monkey, olive baboon as well as many other species of reptiles and amphibians. Have dinner and overnight stay at Mara Serena Lodge on full board basis.

Day 15, 16, 17: Masai Mara Game reserve

We will have three full days with game drives in these plains in search for wildebeest migration and their Mara River crossing. Witness the Cliff Dweller Birds among them the Eagle Species and Vultures Species. Game drives are flexible in search for areas of interests. Optional activities include Hot air balloon ride and Maasai cultural visit.

Day 18: Lake Naivasha

We will depart after breakfast to Lake Naivasha which has a lot to offer when it comes to birds. Arrive in time for lunch. Enjoy afternoon boat ride and birding with possible sightings of Pink-backed Pelican, Goliath and Purple Herons, Southern Pochard, African Marsh-harrier, Purple Swamphen, Lesser Moorhen, Three-banded Plover and Lesser Swamp-warbler. Have dinner and overnight stay at a lodge on full board basis.

Day 19: Nairobi

Today, we depart to Nairobi arriving in time for lunch at Holiday Inn located in the popular residential suburbs of Parklands about 20 kilometers from Jomo Kenyatta airport. It has 171 guest rooms all equipped with TV, radio, telephone, tea/coffee making facilities and private bathroom. Relax in the afternoon then have a Farewell dinner followed by evening transfer for your international flight.
