Safaris Overview
Lying north of the Equator, Samburu National Reserve is mostly known for its rare 5 species not commonly found. The reticulated giraffe, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, Grevy;s Zebra and the Somali Ostrich. The drive to Samburu is highly contrasting. The metropolitan life and landscape from the city of Nairobi changes as give way to views of the agricultural hinterland of central Kenya.
Eye-catching all through, the views of Kenya's highest mountain (Mt. Kenya) and the rolling ranges of the Aberdares until the first stop at the Equator, nature's stamp of the tropics. Flat land as far to the horizon grace the road trip until the break of the arid north. To say the least, Samburu is highly photogenic and home to the Samburu people, a Maasai sub tribe ever known as fierce warriors.
The Beautiful and scenic Ol Pejeta / Sweetwaters Conservancy is nestled between the Aberdare mountain range and the foothills of Mt. Kenya only 15kms from the town of Nanyuki. The quaint and tranquil Ol Pejeta conservancy is made up of 90,000 acres of land and is a sanctuary for the black rhino, elephants, and other wildlife. Sudan, the last World's Northern white rhino found home in this place before his death and the extinction of his species in 2018.
The legendary film 'Born Free' was largely shot in Samburu and very significant scenes of the film 'Out of Africa'. And so was CBS's Survivor 3 a reality-based adventure series, that brought its set to this arid patch of equatorial Africa. The Samburu National Reserve is also the home of Kamunyak, a lioness famous for adopting baby oryx calves. Baby Oryx Travels inspiration comes from that unusual story and phenomena and our aim is to bring you to place where the stories happen.
